About Catherine Airlie

Jean Sutherland MacLeod was born on January 20, 1908 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK to Elizabeth Allen and John MacLeod. Her father, a civil engineer, often moved for work, leading to Jean’s education being spread across various locations such as Bearsden Academy, Swansea, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She eventually settled in North Yorkshire, England after marrying Lionel Walton in 1935, who worked as an electricity board executive until his passing in 1995. They had a son, David Walton, who unfortunately passed away two years before Jean. Jean herself passed away on April 11, 2011 at the age of 103. Jean’s writing career began with stories for The People’s Friend, leading to the publication of her first romance novel in 1936. Most of her works were contemporary romances set in Scotland or exotic locales, often based on her own travels for research. She also wrote under the pseudonym Catherine Airlie from 1948 to 1965 and remained an active member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, meeting notable authors such as Barbara Cartland. She published her final novel in 1996, a year after her husband’s passing.
