About Irena Klepfisz
Irena Klepfisz is a lesbian Jewish author, academic, and activist who was born in the Warsaw Ghetto and experienced the uprising at a very young age. Her father, a member of the Jewish Labour Bund, was killed during the uprising and she and her mother escaped to the Polish countryside, where they hid their Jewish identities with the help of Polish peasants. After the war, they lived briefly in Łódź before moving to Sweden in 1946, and then immigrated to the United States in 1949. Klepfisz attended City College of New York and studied with renowned Yiddish linguist Max Weinreich before receiving her Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Chicago in 1970. Currently, she is a teacher at Barnard College in New York City.
