Who is István Örkény

István Örkény, a Hungarian writer known for his satirical view and creation of grotesque situations in his plays and novels, was born in Budapest, the son of a pharmacist. After studying chemical engineering and pharmacy, he traveled to London in 1938 and lived in Paris, where he worked casually in 1939. He continued his studies at Budapest Technical University and graduated in chemical engineering in 1940. During World War II, he was sent to the front for labor service and taken prisoner of war in 1943. After returning to Hungary in 1946, he worked as a drama editor and later as an outside editor for a publishing company. Despite attempts to conform to Socialist Realism, his work came under attack, leading to his participation in opposition meetings of writers. During the revolution in 1956, he played an active role and sought asylum at the Polish Embassy in Budapest. Subsequently, he was marginalized from the literary scene and faced publication bans. However, in the late 1960s, his work was once again allowed to appear and gained recognition, with his absurd drama The Tót Family becoming a huge success in 1967.
