About James Bond
James Bond BA, FSA, MCIfA is an associate of Kellogg College, University of Oxford. Originally from Oxford, he pursued studies in historical geography at the University of Birmingham and gained his early experience in adult education through teaching part-time for the University’s Extra-Mural Department. His career in archaeology began in 1969 when he was appointed as the Archaeological Field Officer at Worcestershire County Museum. He later returned to Oxfordshire where he worked as the Assistant Keeper of the Field Section of Oxfordshire Museum Services and became an external tutor for Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education. Bond’s career in landscape archaeology led him to work as a freelancer in North Somerset, while maintaining his connections to Oxford through teaching and contributing to various diploma courses and conferences. His research has primarily focused on landscape evolution in Britain and continental Europe, with a particular emphasis on medieval and post-medieval rural settlement and landscape, urban topography, medieval monastic precincts and estates, and park and garden history. Bond has also authored books and papers on these topics, and his book Monastic Landscapes received the Archaeological Book Award from the Council for British Archaeology in 2004. Bond has retired from regular teaching but still presents papers at conferences and lectures to various non-university organizations.
