About James Herriot

James Herriot, whose real name is James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS but also known as Alf Wight, was an English veterinary surgeon and writer. He is most famous for his semi-autobiographical stories, which are often referred to collectively as All Creatures Great and Small. After qualifying as a veterinary surgeon in 1939, Wight worked at a rural practice in Thirsk, Yorkshire for the rest of his life. Inspired by his experiences as a vet, he began writing in 1966 and published his first book, If Only They Could Talk, in 1969. The subsequent release of the book All Creatures Great and Small was a huge success, leading to numerous sequels, movies, and a television adaptation. Although his books are often described as “animal stories”, they are actually an amiable but keen commentary on the human condition, set in the Yorkshire countryside. Wight’s writing is full of shrewd observations about both people and animals, and his stories provide a sense of hope and reassurance in the face of life’s uncertainties.
