Who is Jean Guéhenno
Jean Guéhenno was a well-known writer and educator who made significant contributions to the NRF. He served as the editor-in-chief of the literary journal Europe from 1929 to May 1936 and wrote a novel called ‘The Dead Youth’ based on his experiences during World War I. Despite the German occupation of France, Guéhenno refused to publish out of fear of collaborating with the enemy. Instead, he kept a secret journal documenting the Vichy government’s infringement on traditional French rights and values, as well as his own efforts in support of the Resistance. This journal was eventually published in France in 1947 and was later translated into English by David Ball in 2014 under the title ‘Diary of the Dark Years, 1940-1944.’ This journal has been referred to as “the book French readers have turned to most readily for an account of life under German occupation” by the translator’s introduction and was also listed as one of the Five Best books on the French Resistance by The Wall Street Journal. In recognition of his literary contributions, Jean Guéhenno was elected to the Académie française on 25 January 1962.
