Biography Jo Clayton
Jo Clayton, a California native who was named after the character Jo in Little Women, grew up in Modesto with her three sisters. The sisters shared a room and passed the time by telling each other bedtime stories. Jo’s stories, which often included elements of science fiction and fantasy, were considered the best by her siblings. After graduating from the University of California, Clayton began her career as a teacher near Los Angeles. In 1969, she had a religious experience that led her to move to New Orleans, where she joined the Sisters of Mount Carmel as a novice. Clayton ultimately left the order but remained in New Orleans for a period of time, selling her artwork to support herself. After experiencing multiple robberies, she relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1983, where she remained for the rest of her life. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1996, Clayton continued to write while in the hospital, completing the second book of the Drums of Chaos series and making significant progress on the third and final book before her passing in 1998. Literary executor Katherine Kerr arranged for established author Kevin Andrew Murphy to complete the third book, which is now finished.
