To and Fro: Modernism and Vernacular Architecture
“To and Fro: Modernism and Vernacular Architecture” by Joana Cunha Leal explores the intersection of modernism and vernacular architecture, two seemingly at-odds design movements. The book delves into the ways in which modernist architects engaged with and were influenced by traditional, vernacular architectural forms and techniques. Cunha Leal delves into the complex relationship between these two seemingly oppositional design philosophies, shedding new light on how they have impacted and informed each other throughout history.
The book examines how modernist architects, rather than rejecting vernacular architecture outright, often drew inspiration from it and sought to incorporate its principles into their own work. Cunha Leal offers a nuanced view of how these two design movements have interacted, challenging previously held assumptions about their relationship. The book also explores the ways in which vernacular architecture has itself been influenced and shaped by modernist principles, shedding new light on the complex and dynamic ways in which design philosophies inform and impact one another.
By highlighting the ways in which modernism and vernacular architecture have influenced and informed each other, Cunha Leal offers a fresh perspective on the history of architectural design.
