Biography João Gilberto Noll

João Gilberto Noll was a Brazilian writer born in Porto Alegre, in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. He began his university studies in literature at the UFRGS-Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, but paused his studies to work as a journalist in Rio de Janeiro. After spending time in São Paulo, he returned to Rio to continue his work in journalism and his studies in literature. Noll’s literary career began with the publication of his first short story in 1970, and he went on to receive numerous literary prizes for his work. His early international recognition came when he participated in the Writer’s Program at the University of Iowa and had his work published in an anthology of new Brazilian writers in Germany. Noll’s first collection of stories was followed by several novels, including Hotel Atlantico and Harmada, which were later published in English. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Noll continued to publish short stories in major Brazilian newspapers.
