About Laury Silvers
I have taught courses on Islam, Sufism, and Gender at Skidmore College and the University of Toronto. The Sufi Mysteries stems from my desire to explore the people and places I have researched beyond the confines of academic skepticism. This book is a tribute to the early pious folk, mystics, and Sufis as human beings, and to my personal experience of Islam. I currently reside in Toronto with my partner, Michael, and my dog, Billie Girl. I am also a member of a local Muslim Sufi order, and am fortunate to be close to my stepdaughters, Kaya and Mishi, their partners Ryan and Ben, and their mother, Eleonore.
In conclusion, Laury Silvers has contributed an extensive body of work that seeks to challenge and confront dominant narratives about Islam and gender. Through her books, she has highlighted the diverse experiences and perspectives of Muslim women, deconstructing stereotypes and showcasing the rich complexity of Islamic history and theology. Her ideological lessons center on the importance of critically examining gender dynamics within Islamic societies and challenging oppressive norms, while also emphasizing the need for inclusivity and intersectionality in discussions of Muslim identity and lived experiences. Silvers’ work serves as a crucial intervention in dismantling misconceptions and fostering a more nuanced understanding of gender and Islam.
