About Richard Atwater

Richard Tupper Atwater (1892-1948) was a prominent Chicago journalist who made significant contributions to the literary and arts scene of the city. His work appeared in several newspapers, including the Chicago Evening Post, the Chicago Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and the Herald-Examiner. In addition to his journalism, Atwater also taught Greek at the University of Chicago.

One of Atwater’s notable projects was his writing of the first part of a book inspired by Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic expedition, sparked by a documentary he saw in 1932. Unfortunately, his progress was halted by a stroke in 1934. Despite this setback, Atwater was still able to cultivate a literary legacy with other works such as Rickety Rhymes of Riq (published in 1925) and Doris and the Trolls (published in 1931).
