Who is Sue Thomas
After a 20-year hiatus from fiction writing, during which I immersed myself in nonfiction and experimental digital work, I am excited to announce that I am returning to the world of novels. In the late 1990s, I found myself disconnected from fiction as I delved deep into internet life, finding the online world more real than the stories I used to write. However, I am now ready to dive back into the realm of fiction with my new novel, ‘The Fault in Reality’, which explores the intersection of technology and nature. Set in 2016, a year of turmoil for the UK and the US, the novel delves into the mysteries of this intersection. Though it’s daunting to restart in fiction after two decades without an agent, I am hopeful that I will find a friendly publisher for my work.
My journey in writing began with ‘Correspondence’, which was short-listed for the Arthur C Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in 1992, The James Tiptree Award, and the European Science Fiction Award. ‘Water’, my second novel, was published in 1994, and I also edited the anthology ‘Wild Women: Contemporary Short Stories By Women Celebrating Women’ in the same year. Afterward, I delved into nonfiction, writing ‘Creative Writing: A Handbook For Workshop Leaders’ in 1995, the cyberspace memoir/travelogue ‘Hello World: travels in virtuality’ in 2004, and ‘Technobiophilia: nature and cyberspace’ in 2013. My most recent book, ‘Nature and Wellbeing in the Digital Age’ (2017), delves into the psychology behind our love for nature and offers practical advice on how to feel better without logging off.
Throughout my writing journey, I’ve contributed to various anthologies and journals and have written for esteemed publications such as The Guardian, Orion Magazine, and Slate. Born in Leicestershire, England, in 1951 to Dutch parents who had settled in England, I founded the trAce Online Writing Centre at Nottingham Trent University in 1995 and became Professor of New Media at De Montfort University in 2005. Since 2013, I’ve been a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University, where I draw constant inspiration from the historical and literary surroundings, such as Shelley Manor, the former residence of Mary Shelley’s son Percy and his wife Jane, located just a short walk from my home.
Overall, Sue Thomas’s books offer a compelling blend of mystery, adventure, and human drama, with strong moral and ideological lessons woven throughout. Her works convey messages of resilience, empathy, and the importance of facing challenges head-on, all tied together with a sense of hope and optimism. Through her stories, Thomas encourages readers to embrace their inner strength, cultivate meaningful connections with others, and seek out the beauty and wonder in life’s most ordinary moments. Her captivating narratives and powerful thematic elements make her books a must-read for anyone searching for both entertainment and inspiration.
