Biography Teju Cole

I was born to Nigerian parents and raised in Lagos, where my mother taught French and my father was a successful business executive exporting chocolate. My love for reading began at a young age, and I vividly remember the first book I read at the age of six, an abridged version of Tom Sawyer. By the time I was fifteen, I was already publishing cartoons regularly in Prime People, Nigeria’s equivalent of Vanity Fair. Two years later, I made the move to the United States. Since then, I have dedicated most of my time to studying art history, with the exception of a brief and dissatisfying stint in medical school. I currently reside in Brooklyn, where I continue to pursue my passion for art and creativity.
