Who is W.E. Johns

William Earl Johns, also known as Captain W.E. Johns, was born in Bengeo, Hertfordshire, England to Richard Eastman Johns, a tailor, and Elizabeth Johns (née Earl), the daughter of a master butcher. He had a younger brother, Russell Ernest Johns, and attended Hertford Grammar School, where he excelled at shooting and developed an early ambition to be a soldier. After apprenticing as a county municipal surveyor and working as a sanitary inspector, Johns married Maude Penelope Hunt in 1914. With the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Territorial Army and saw action in Gallipoli, the Suez Canal area, and Salonika. After contracting malaria, he put in for a transfer to the Royal Flying Corps and became a Second Lieutenant. He was wounded and captured by the Germans during a bombing raid on Mannheim, but managed to escape before being recaptured and imprisoned until the end of the war.
