Yang Lian, born on February 22, 1955, is a poet who is associated with the Misty Poets and the Searching for Roots school. He was born in Bern, Switzerland and spent his childhood in Beijing, where he attended primary school. However, his education was disrupted by the Cultural Revolution, and he was sent to Changping county near Beijing for ‘re-education through labor’. After the Cultural Revolution ended and Mao Zedong passed away in 1977, Yang returned to Beijing and began work with the state broadcasting service.
