Tomás González nació en Medellín en 1950 y desde principios de los años setenta, mientras estudiaba filosofía en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, se dedicó a la escritura. Desde entonces, ha continuado publicando sus libros tanto en su país natal como en México. A excepción de algunos poemas y cuentos ambientados en Nueva York, la mayor parte de su obra se centra en Colombia. Entre sus publicaciones se encuentran las novelas Primero estaba el mar y Para antes del olvido, que ganó el V Premio Nacional de Novela Plaza & Janés en 1987, la colección de cuentos El Rey del Honka-Monka, y la colección de poemas Manglares.
